We have talked about Blues on the green before held here in Zilker Park, only one more show left. Come out next wednesday August 8th, to see Quiet Company headline the nights show!
This (much welcomed) rainy weather always has me going banana’s for a nice cup of coffee! This place truly is the place to go for that. Spiderhouse offers a variety of coffee drinks, sandwiches, herbal tea’s, locally brewed beers, wine, martinis and its a wifi hotspot to boot! Nested in a neighborhood right off “the drag” (guadalupe street), spiderhouse really does embody what the austin culture is all about. A great place to catch up with friends over beer, working on your last paper over coffee, or just a spot to retreat and people watch to music, this really is the place to go!
One of my favorite happy hour spots for food and drinks is Maiko, located in the heart of sixth street. Sunday through thursday their happy hour goes all day long with low priced appetizers and drinks. You can find a great variety from calamari to mac and cheese. Their happy hour sushi rolls are half off (selected rolls) and four dollar jameson and titos. Not to mention great deals on all draft beers. If you’re ever looking for a good and relaxing meal or just trying to kill some time over drinks, Maiko is a great place to go without breaking the bank.
The City of Austin Power Plant was built in 1950 and generated electricity for nearly forty years. Once considered unprofitable in 1989 then shut it down and has since stood as an Austin landmark. The red neon light serves as a beautiful focal point for joggers and bicyclsts out on town lake in the evenings. Austin now preserves this building as a multi-use public attraction which you can find near W 6th street overlooking the lake.
This 24 hour coffee shop offers the ideal environment for anyone looking to get some work / study done. With its vintage collaboration of furniture and free wifi, one can clearly see how hours can fly by here. Hell, i’m writing this from here as we speak! If you do find yourself here, treat yourself to their infamous “Mojo”. Served over shaved ice, this coffee with a hazelnut twist is said to be their most eye opening drink. Not a coffee fan? Epoch also offers a variety of bottled drinks as well as hot teas for you to enjoy (no alcohol though). While they aren’t a restaurant, they do carry fresh sandwiches, croissants, a variety of baked goods and if you catch them on the right day, pizza! Bring your buddies out and enjoy board games offered here. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the life sized guillotine right across the street. Even more ominous, is the Texas State hospital cemetery located right next door.
So we have already touched on Iron Cactus before but now we have a few more things to throw in. We all know how amazing their drinks are during happy hour but we forgot to mention the most important part… the FOOD. Phenomenal burgers, fajitas, quesadillas and more! There is something on the menu for everybody. They graciously serve yummy chips and salsa before the meal and if you’re lucky enough to make it in there during happy hour, you will be able to get any appetizer half off…I know all of you college foodies must be geeking right now at this so hopefully this will go above and beyond your expectations like it did ours. :)
For our past post on Iron Cactus!
